Despite its bad name and negative fame, crack has always found its customers, being one of the most widespread drugs consumed in the world. It came into the American market in 1980 on the west coast of California, some parts of the Caribbean and Texas. In the 2000s, even Europe was cast under the spell of crack cocaine. Crack is derived from the coca plant which is native to South America. According to surveys, more than 37 million people above the age of 12 have used crack. In 2007, US Federal courts reported 5,477 individuals guilty of crack-related crimes. Although the number of consumers has declined significantly, the concern has not subsided.
